Charline Foray

Predoctoral Researcher
Primate Paleobiology and Evolution research group

After graduating with a dual bachelor’s degree in Biology and in Natural History and Prehistory from Sorbonne Sciences University and the National Museum of Natural History in Paris, France, I continued to pursue my interest in human evolution by applying to the International Master’s in Quaternary and Prehistory through the Erasmus Mundus+ scholarship. This opportunity allowed me to spend two years abroad in Portugal and Spain. During this time, I conducted my master’s research in collaboration with the Institut Català de Paleoecologia Humana y Evolución (IPHES), where I presented my thesis entitled “The wrist of Homo sapiens: investigating modularity and sexual dimorphism using a geomorphometric approach.”

I am now pursuing a doctoral thesis in the Primate Paleobiology & Evolution Research Group of the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont under the supervision of Dr. Júlia Arias-Martorell and Dr. David M. Alba. My PhD project is funded by the Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI) through the Contratos para la Formación de Personal Investigador predoctoral (FPI), and is tied to the project PID2024-159434NB-I00, funded by AEI and the  fondos FEDER.

My main research topic relies on a 3D protocol to analyses the internal micro architecture of the radius of extant and fossil primates. More specifically in the course of my PhD I am investigating the loading pattern in trabecular bone related to locomotor and postural behaviour in catarrhines and Miocene apes, in order to gain new insights into bone functional plasticity throughout primate evolutionary history.
