Investigator Neogene & Quaternary Faunas

(Krimpen aan den Ijssel, Netherlands, 1959)

Investigador senior en el departamento Neógeno y faunas del Cuaternario en el ICP. Su investigación se centra en las principales cuestiones biológicas en un contexto geológico, tratando los campos de puente como la biología evolutiva, la estratigrafía y paleoclimatología.

Terminó su doctorado en la Universidad de Utrecht, en los Países Bajos en 1997 con un estudio sobre la taxonomía, la cronología, paleobiología y paleoecología de micromamíferos del Mioceno Tardío de la Cuenca de Teruel, España. Realizó varios estudios de postdoctorado en la Universidad de Utrecht centrados en los patrones y causas del recambio faunístico de pequeños mamíferos, y la reconstrucción del clima europeo terrestre en el Neógeno. Ha ejercido de investigador en Madrid y Helsinki y es miembro del cuerpo docente invitado en la Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Actualmente está involucrado en proyectos relacionados con astrocronología terrestre, la geoquímica isotópica, la morfometría geométrica, y el modelado de la evolución del tamaño corporal.

Ha publicado su trabajo en revistas importantes como Nature, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Palaeo3, Journal of Paleontology and Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. Su investigación ha recibido el apoyo de la Universidad de Utrecht, de la Academia de Finlandia, de la Diputación General de Aragón, del Programa de Intercambio Cultural de la Universidad de Utrecht-CSIC, y ha sido financiado por la CE BiodIberia Programa. 
Tiene amplia experiencia en trabajo de campo adquirida en España, Turquía y Pakistan. Ha sido profesor en la Universidad de Utrecht y en la Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, fue conferenciante invitado o participante en muchas ocasiones, entre ellas una estancia como profesor en Flint, en la Universidad de Yale. Actualmente es el presidente del Círculo Paleobiológico Neerlandés-flamenco  por el que coordinó varios congresos y ejerce de editor asociado de la Revista de Zoología de la Linnean Society.
