Currículum abreujat

David M. Alba (Barcelona, 1975) obtingué el títol de doctor en Biologia per la Universitat de Barcelona el 2005, amb una tesi sobre l’origen i l’evolución dels grans antropomorfs i els humans, realitzada a l’Institut de Paleontologia M. Crusafont gràcies a una beca de la Generalitat de Catalunya. Després d’un postdoc ‘Beatriu de Pinós’ de dos anys a la Unitat d'Antropologia Biològica de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, fou investigador visitant (2008-2009) al Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra de la Università degli Studi di Firenze (Itàlia), fins que s’incorporà com a investigador ‘Ramón y Cajal’ (2009-2014) al Grup de Paleoprimatologia i Paleontologia Humana de l’Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont (ICP). Posteriorment, ha estat investigador visitant (2012-2013) al Dipartimento di Scienze della Terra de la Università degli Studi di Torino (Itàlia), i ha fet estades més curtes en d’altres institucions estrangeres (American Museum of Natural History i Stony Brook University, Nova York, EUA). Des de 2012, lidera el Grup de Recerca de Faunes del Neogen i Quaternari de l’ICP, on actualment hi desenvolupa dues línies de recerca principals: (1) paleobiologia evolutiva i filogènia dels vertebrats del Miocè i Plio-Pleistocè de l’Europa Occidental (sobretot mamífers i rèptils); i (2) dinàmica de la paleobiodiversitat a la conca del Vallès-Penedès, amb l’objectiu d’analitzar la relació entre els recanvis faunístics i els canvis paleoambientals durant el Neogen i Quaternari.

Obtingué el certificat del Programa I3 pel Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (en reconeixement a una trajectòria investigadora excel·lent) i fou acreditat com a catedràtic en els camps de ‘Zoologia i Antropologia’ i ‘Geologia estructural, geologia estratigràfica i paleontologia’ pel Ministero dell’Istruzione, dell’Università e della Ricerca d’Itàlia. És membe del Comitè Editorial (Editor Associat) de Journal of Human Evolution (la revista més prestigiosa en l’àmbit de l’antropologia física i la paleoprimatologia evolutiva) i regularment actua de revisor per a les més reconegudes revistes paleontològiques, antropològiques i multidisciplinars. Fou soci fundador de dues empreses privades dedicades a la paleontologia aplicada (Palaeotheria, S.C.P. i Fossilia Serveis Paleontològics i Geològics, S.L.), i ha dirigit múltiples campanyes paleontològiques de camp, com les de l’Abocador de Can Mata (Miocè mitjà), Can Llobateres (Miocè superior) i Vallparadís (Pleistocè), que conduïren al descobriment de moltes importants restes fòssils de primats (incloent-hi l’esquelet de l’homínid basal Pierolapithecus catalaunicus). També dirigí la publicació a Science d’un altre nou gènere d’hominoïdeu, Pliobates cataloniae, que tingué una gran repercussió entre els mitjans. En total, ha descrit 35 nous tàxons, incloent-hi 6 gèneres i 11 (sub)espècies de vertebrats fòssils. Imparteix docència en els màsters oficials en Paleontologia i en Antropologia Biològica a Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona / Universitat de Barcelona, i també té responsabilitats addicionals en la coordinació d’activitats docents o en la participació en diversos comitès i comissions. Al llarg dels anys, ha participat en molts projectes de recerca, essent l’investigador principal d’un projecte sobre l’evolució dels ecosistemes terrestres a l’Europa Occidental finançat pel Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (2012-2014), així com de diversos projectes de camp finançats per la National Geographic Society i la Generalitat de Catalunya.

Pel que fa a outputs científics, té més de 150 contribucions en 62 congressos i workshops (que resultaren en 122 resums publicats, 45 dels quals en revistes indexades pel Journal Citation Reports, JCR), té un excel·lent currículum de publicacions, amb un llibre, 13 capítols, 12 escrits divulgatius, i 151 articles científics, dels quals 97 en revistes JCR (68 pertanyents al Q1), incloent-hi revistes multidisciplinars de gran renom (Science, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, Nature Communications, PLOS ONE), així com les revistes més prestigioses en els camps de la biologia (Proceedings of the Royal Society B), l’antropologia (Journal of Human Evolution, Evolutionary Anthropology, American Journal of Physical Anthropology), la zoologia (Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, Journal of Mammalian Evolution) i la paleontologia (Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, Journal of Systematic Palaeontology). Actualment té un índex h de 18 (segons Web of Science) i de 19 (segons Scopus), i ha dirigit tres tesis doctorals finalitzades, a més de múltiples treballs de màster.
