Predoc. Paleoprimatology and Human Paleontology

Barbastro (Huesca), 1986

She is working on her thesis project in the Paleoprimatology and Human Paleontology Research Group of the ICP with a FPU pre-doctoral grant. Her investigation is focused on the inference of the posture and modes of locomotion of fossil hominoids from the Vallès-Penedès Basin by means of their limb bones.

During 2010-2011, she did the inter-universitary master (UB-UAB) of Paleontology. The final project of the master, supervised by Dr. Salvador Moyà-Solà, consisted on the description of both the external anatomy and internal structure of the Dryopithecus fontani’s proximal femur, recovered in the locality of Abocador de Can Mata (Els Hostalets de Pierola).

She graduated in Biology with a Zoology specialization from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (2010). Additionally, she did her Degree Project under the supervision of Dr. Manuel Salesa (MNCN), which focused on the morphofunctional anatomy of the different bones of the hind limb of cercopithecines.

During her degree, she collaborated with different research teams focused on Vertebrate Paleontology. She has been associated with the team for introductory research of the Miocene locality of Somosaguas (UCM), working on the micromammal paleobiogeography from this locality. Since then, she has collaborated in several excavations organized by the Department of Paleobiology of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales of Madrid-CSIC, the Universidad de Zaragoza and the Department of Geology of the Universitat de València. She has also participated in the excavations of Pinilla del Valle (Madrid) and La Roma (Teruel).

Postdoc. Neogene and Quaternary Faunas

Joan Madurell-Malapeira, currently works as a postdoctoral researcher at the Institut Català de Paleontologia Miquel Crusafont. He obtained his PhD in Geological Sciences in December of 2010 with a thesis entitled “The Villafranchian carnivores of the North-Eastern Iberian Peninsula and the Early-Middle Pleistocene Transition”, under the direction of Prof. Salvador Moyà-Solà and Prof. Bienvenido Martínez-Navarro. From 2007 onwards, he had published close to forty papers in peer-reviewed international scientific journals including, Quaternary Science Reviews, Journal of Human Evolution, Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology and Molecular Ecology. These papers are mostly devoted in Carnivore taxonomy, paleobiology and their relationships of competence with the first European hominins. His research is also focused in the consequences of the great climatic shifts associated to the ‘Mid-Pleistocene Revolution’ in the large mammal assemblages and especially in the competition between large felids, hyenas and the first European hominins. Additionally, he is the responsible of several fieldwork excavations including: the Vallparadís Section (Vallès-Penedès Basin), the Incarcal karstic complex (Banyoles-Besalú Basin) and Lachambre cave complex (French eastern Pyrenees).

Investigator Neogene & Quaternary Faunas

(Krimpen aan den Ijssel, Netherlands, 1959)

Jan van Dam is senior researcher within the department Neogene and Quaternary faunas at ICP, and guest researcher at the Department of Earth Sciences, Utrecht University, the Netherlands. His research focuses on major biological questions in a geological context, attempting to bridge fields such as evolutionary biology, macroecology, stratigraphy and paleoclimatology. He finished his PhD at Utrecht University, the Netherlands in 1997 with a study on the taxonomy, chronology, paleobiology and paleoecology of Late Miocene micromammals from the Teruel Basin, Spain. He performed several postdoc studies at Utrecht University focusing on patterns and causes of small-mammal turnover and reconstructions of Neogene European terrestrial climate. He fulfilled research grant positions in Madrid and Helsinki, and is guest researcher at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. Currently he is involved in studies involving terrestial astrochronology, isotopic geochemistry, geometric morphometrics, and the modeling of body size evolution.

He published his work in important journals, such as Nature, Earth and Planetary Science Letters, Palaeo3, Journal of Paleontology and Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. His research has received support from the Spanish Ministery of Science and Innovation, Dutch Science Foundation, Utrecht University, Academy of Finland, Diputacíon General de Aragón, Cultural Exchange Program Utrecht University-CSIC, and EC-funded BiodIberia Program. Extensive fieldwork experience has been acquired by him in Spain, Turkey and Pakistan. He has teached at Utrecht University and the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, was invited speaker or participant at many occasions, among which is a stay as Flint Lecturer at Yale University. Currently he is the chair of the Dutch-Flemish Paleobiological Circle, for which he also coordinated a series of symposia and excursions. Between 2001 and 2009 he fulfilled an associated editorship for the Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society.

Biografia
