Thursday July 21, we are going to enjoy a fieldtrip to the most important dinosaur paleontological sites in the north of the Iberian Peninsula , Fumanya and Pinyes. Fumanya tracksite (Vallcebre, Berguedà region, Barcelona Province) has delivered thousands of footprints and dozens of track‐ways of sauropods, becoming one of the most important tracksites of dinosaurs in the world. Located in the lower part of the Tremp Fm. (Early Maastrichtian), Fumanya tracksite is also one of the youngest sites with dinosaur footprints worldwide. The heritage significance of the Upper Cretaceous reservoir has meant the declaration of greater category of protection for all sites with dinosaur footprints as a Cultural Asset of National Interest. In a privileged location, near the site of Fumanya we will enjoy lunch in the restaurant of the Jou Hotel, where you can taste typical foods from the region.
After lunch we will move west of the Fumanya tracksite, near to the locality of Coll de Nargó (Alt Urgell region, Lleida Province). Taking the old road to the abandoned village of Sallent, we will arrive at the Pinyes eggsite, where we will see one of the most incredible sites with dinosaur eggs in the world. To date, several types of dinosaur fossil eggs have been described at this site, each one located in different parts of stratigraphical section and attributed to dinosaurs and crocodiles. Pinyes site is also known for the largest nest ever reported in Europe, with up to 25 eggs, which allowed to infer some nesting patterns for these larges dinosaurs. Furthermore, different types of plant remains (palms, ferns, and charophites) and dinosaur footprints have been found at this paleontological site.
