July is high season in Majorca. Please, let us know a.s.a.p. if you will join us on this trip. Early booking is a must to get a good price.


Visit to Caves of Majorca

An excursion to Majorca is being planned, starting on Friday July 22, 2011.  A couple of visits are planned for Friday and Saturday, and could be extended to Sunday if participants wish to stay longer.

  • Friday July 22: Majorca - Cova des Moro - Monastery of Lluc - Sóller
  • Saturday July 23: Sóller - Cova de Moleta - Natural History Museum and Botanic Garden in Sóller
  • Sunday July 24: a few proposals are made

Cova des Moro and Cova de Moleta are caves where important material of Myotragus balearicus was recovered. Please, take a look at the detailed travel plan (at the end of this page), and let us know if you would join us on this trip, and how long would you like to stay in Majorca. Prices and final programme will depend on the number and interests of participants.

We are proposing a unique trip to Majorca, with visits to places difficult to find in any guide or organized travel. Will you miss it?

 

Cost

Flights and hotels should be booked by participants.

  • Flights BCN-Majorca-BCN cost between 100-150 € (price by Vueling and Air Berlin).
  • Hotels in Sóller can be expensive, so we strongly recommend to book as soon as you can. Here follow a few proposals, but please look for special offers by yourselves or contacting a travel agency. http://www.sollernet.com/hotelen.html

Registration fee (50 Euros) will only be used as a booking fee, and will be later reimbursed. Participants registered to ISPH 2011 have complimentary transportation from the airport to Cova des Moro and to Sóller on Friday, and from Sóller to Cova de Muleta on Saturday, as well as lunch and dinner on Friday and Saturday. Family and/or friends of participants coming to Majorca have complimentary transportation, but will be requested to pay their meals.

How to register

Early registration will be opened till April 30, and logistics will be planned  according to participants registered by this date. Late registration will be opened till June 15, but number of late registrations might be limited and participants might be requested to provide their own transportation in the island.

In order to book your place in the excursion, you need to:

  • pay a registration fee of 50 €, to be used as a booking fee and that will be either reimbursed.
  • send us a mail ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) and let us know how many days you will stay, and your preferences for the third day. If you are coming with family  and/or friends, please let us know names and ages of all travellers. Is there anything else we should be aware of (disabilities, special diets, …)?
  • book your flights and hotel as soon as possible, as Majorca is a very touristic place and prices will go up every day. We will send a mail to all registered people when the number of participants guarantees the excursion.

Travel Plan

Friday July 22

 11:00 Arrival at the airport

11:30 Group transport leaves to Cova des Moro.

13:00 Lunch and visit to Cova des Moro
Cova des Moro is the cave where important material of the fossil bovid Myotragus balearicus was recovered. The cave is located in the Manacor coast. In the 70s, last Century, the first fossils of Myotragus were found in this place.
16:00 Travel to Sóller over the monastery of Lluc.
Following an inland road from Manacor through Petra, Sineu, Inca and Selva to the monastery of Lluc in the picturesque Tramuntana mountain range, and back over Escorca and Fornalutx to Sóller.
The Santuari de Lluc is a monastery and pilgrimage site located in the municipality of Escorca in north-west Majorca. It is located in a basin on a height of 525 meters and is surrounded by a number of high mountains such as the Puig de Massanella. The monastery was founded in the 13th century after a Moorish shepherd found a statue of the Virgin Mary on the future location of the monastery. Lluc is considered to be the most important pilgrimage site on Majorca. It is also known for its boys' choir which has gained international fame and has regular concerts. A boarding school and numerous touristic facilities are part of Lluc. Today former monks' cells are leased as spare rooms. As it is located centrally in the Serra de Tramuntana it is often used as a starting point for walking-tours. Round the back of the monastery buildings is an interesting botanical garden trail with a small exposition on preserving the environment of the Majorcan mountain region. (source, wikipedia)

Saturday July 23

10:00 Visit to Cova de Moleta.
Cova de Moleta is another cave where important material of the fossil bovid Myotragus balearicus was recovered. The cave is located in the mountains above the picturesque Port of Sóller (Sóller harbor). The owner will invite us to a soft drink.
 
13:00 Lunch at the refuge close to the lighthouse of the Sóller harbor.
 
16.00 Visit to the Natural History Museum and Botanic Garden in Sóller
 
20:00 Dinner and night in Sóller

Sunday July 24

 For those who would like to stay longer there are several proposals:

  • a visit to the Arabian gardens of Alfabia, close to Sóller
  • a visit to the talaiotic monuments
  • a walk through the canyon of Biniaraix up to the mountain l’Ofre (5 hours)
